There are multiple categories of followers in LumApps, which is a popular enterprise social collaboration and employee experience platform. In this post, we want to showcase our approach to visualizing two types of followers: users and communities. While some large enterprises may have hundreds of communities, most companies won’t have too many. For most situations, a simple 2D visualization should suffice. In this example, we combined a 2D force graph with a pie chart that represents the popularity of each community in terms of the number of followers. The datagrid below the pie chart also lists the details about the users who follow specific communities (four communities are selected in this screenshot). This type of visualization can help a community manager to instantly see:
In the case of users, the situation is much more complex. With organizations having tens, and sometimes even hundreds, of thousands of users, two dimensions are simply not enough to visualize the complex network of users. Therefore, we used our 3D force graph visualization widget. However, when even this is not enough to fully explore the complexity of the network, the visualization can be explored in VR, allowing you to freely ‘fly’ between clusters of like-minded users and explore complex relationships. Like most other visualizations, this one is interactive, and clicking on a node will show you the list of users who are following and being followed by that user.
